Moments before Becky passed way on Easter Sunday morning in 2017, I promised her that 'no one would ever forget her name.' Two weeks later, I launched the Becky Baker Foundation with the sole purpose of providing free mammograms and thermograms to those who could not afford the screening.
In the past three years, we have provided, at no cost to the recipient, over 2,100 screenings throughout the United States.
From May of 2017, through the end of December, 2019, the cost of these screenings – over $400,000 – was covered by my personal funds. Beginning in January of this year, we became an official IRS 501(C)(3) non-profit charity, legally able to accept tax-deductible donations. We have quickly risen to the highest level of transparency with GuideStar, earning the rare Platinum Seal of Transparency for 2019 and 2020. Yet, as a result of the pandemic, donations have been slow in coming.
I am so very proud of the thousands of women (and men) who have taken ownership of their bodies by accepting our free screenings over these past three years and it is my hope and prayer that each of these will commit their lives to breast cancer prevention, staying proactive in defeating this evil disease.
These past three months have drained the financial giving to many non-profit charities and ours is no different. Simply put, we cannot provide any more free screenings until our financial partners are once again in a position to assist us with this grand endeavor. I anticipate that the donations will return sometime this summer and fall, and then we will resume our free screening programs.
During this difficult time, please remember that breast cancer does not have a stay-at-home order. Tumors continue to grow. I am heartbroken that more women than ever before will most likely be diagnosed with this disease because so many now have lost their jobs and insurance, and thus cannot afford the cost of these screenings.
Thank you to all who have donated to this noble cause in 2020. There is a special place in Heaven for all of you, as your dollars have saved lives. Unfortunately, the demand for free mammograms or thermograms is far exceeding our financial supply at the moment.
